Nowadays, researching skincare has never been easier. People simply ask Google or an AI assistant, read the answer, and make a decision. The problem is that many of those answers come from articles written by companies selling tallow skincare – companies with their own products to promote.

At Cowsmetics, we’d rather do something different. Rather than making bold claims or saying we are the only right way, we prefer to simply explain why we choose to make our products the way we do.

We didn’t reinvent tallow. Our ancestors would probably find that idea quite amusing. For generations, people simply rendered beef fat into tallow because it worked. They didn’t need complicated formulas or long ingredient lists. They relied on simple ingredients, careful craftsmanship, and quality raw materials. We’re not trying to change that – we’re just bringing it back, with modern hygiene, careful sourcing, and high standards in how we make it.

Many modern tallow balms are blended with seed oils or other plant oils. There’s nothing inherently wrong with those ingredients, but that’s not the direction we chose. We believe that if you buy a tallow balm, you should actually feel like you are using tallow. That’s why our formulas are built around premium grass-fed beef tallow, with as few unnecessary additions as possible. No fillers. No unnecessary seed oils. Just honest ingredients that let tallow remain the star.

People often ask about beef suet versus other beef fat. In reality, the quality of a finished tallow balm depends on much more than just the source of the fat – whether it comes from suet around the kidneys or from other parts of the animal. It also depends on the animal’s diet, the sourcing, the rendering process, the purification, the freshness, and the level of care that goes into making it. These factors have a much bigger impact on the final product than marketing claims alone.

Sometimes people assume that tallow made only from suet is always the “best” option. Suet is very pure, but it also creates a much harder and firmer texture when it cools. On its own, it can feel quite solid and less practical for everyday skincare.

Suet is often described as the cleanest fat, while other beef fat (trim fat) is sometimes misunderstood. In reality, both can produce high-quality tallow when they are properly sourced and carefully rendered. During rendering, any water, impurities, or protein residues are naturally removed, and what remains is pure fat. That means concerns about “unclean” fat, strong meat smells, or leftover tissues do not apply to properly prepared tallow.

There is also a lot of discussion online about nutrients being “diluted” when different fats are blended. However, the overall composition of tallow depends much more on the animal’s diet and feeding (grass-fed vs grain-fed), rather than the exact location of the fat on the animal. 

That’s why we don’t rely on suet alone. We also use carefully selected beef fat to adjust the texture and make the balm softer and more spreadable. This doesn’t reduce the quality of the tallow – it simply changes how it feels on the skin.

The goal is simple: to create a balm that still stays true to traditional tallow, but feels smooth and easy to use, almost like a cream. In a way, this is very close to how tallow was used in the past – simple, practical skincare made from what was available and designed to work in real life.

That’s why we focus on producing clean, carefully rendered tallow instead of chasing buzzwords or trends.

We’re not here to convince anyone that every other product is wrong. We’re here to make something we would genuinely use ourselves – simple, natural, and made with care.

Sometimes the best ideas aren’t new. Sometimes they’re just worth bringing back.
