FAQ

You ask - we answer

What is beef tallow?

Beef tallow is rendered beef fat that has been gently heated and purified to remove moisture and impurities. It has been used for cooking and skincare for thousands of years because of its stability, simplicity, and nourishing fatty acid profile.

What is the difference between beef suet and beef fat?

Beef suet is the hard fat found around the kidneys and loins of cattle. Other beef fat, often called trim fat, comes from other parts of the animal.

Both can produce high-quality tallow when they are sourced well and carefully rendered. Suet naturally creates a firmer tallow, while selected beef fat produces a softer, creamier texture.

Why doesn’t Cowsmetics use only beef suet?

Pure suet creates a very firm tallow. While that can be excellent for stability, it can also make a balm much harder to scoop and spread.

That’s why we combine carefully selected grass-fed beef suet with premium beef fat.

The result is a balm that stays true to traditional tallow while having a smoother, creamier texture that’s comfortable to use every day.

Doesn’t mixing beef fat reduce the quality of the tallow?

No.

A common misconception is that using beef fat automatically makes tallow lower quality.

In reality, the final quality depends much more on the animal’s diet, freshness, sourcing, and the rendering process than simply where the fat came from.

When properly rendered, both suet and carefully selected beef fat produce clean, high-quality tallow.

Does beef fat make tallow smell like meat?

Not when it is properly rendered.

Fresh, carefully trimmed fat that is slowly rendered and purified should not leave your skincare smelling like a steak.

The quality of the raw fat and the rendering process have a much bigger impact on the final scent than whether the fat came from around the kidneys or another part of the animal.

Does tallow from beef fat contain meat, blood or impurities?

No.

During rendering, moisture, proteins and any remaining impurities are removed.

Properly rendered tallow is purified fat.

Is beef suet more nutritious than other beef fat?

Suet naturally has a slightly different fatty acid profile, but there is no strong scientific evidence that it contains dramatically higher amounts of beneficial nutrients simply because it comes from around the kidneys.

The overall composition of tallow is influenced much more by factors such as whether the cattle are grass-fed, their breed, and their diet.

Where does your tallow come from?

We source fresh, organic, grass-fed Irish beef suet and carefully selected beef fat directly from Irish farms.

Every batch is trimmed, rendered, purified and crafted in-house.

We don’t buy ready-made tallow—we make our own from scratch so we know exactly what goes into every jar.

Do cows die to make tallow?

No.

Beef tallow is a natural by-product of meat production.

The cattle are not raised or processed for skincare.

Using tallow helps make better use of the whole animal and reduces unnecessary waste instead of allowing this valuable natural fat to be discarded.

Why don’t you use seed oils?

Our philosophy is simple.

When people buy a tallow balm, we believe tallow should remain the main ingredient.

Instead of replacing a large portion of the formula with seed oils, we use carefully selected beef suet and beef fat to achieve a smooth, spreadable texture while staying true to traditional tallow skincare.

Did people really use tallow for skincare?

Yes.

For centuries, people used rendered animal fats to help protect and moisturise their skin, especially during harsh weather.

Modern skincare has introduced many new ingredients, but the idea behind tallow remains the same: simple, nourishing skincare made from natural ingredients.

Why do you make your own tallow instead of buying it?

Because quality starts with the raw ingredients.

By sourcing fresh Irish beef suet and beef fat ourselves, trimming it by hand, and rendering every batch in-house, we have complete control over quality from start to finish.

It’s slower and more labour-intensive, but we believe it’s worth it.

Is Cowsmetics tallow food-grade?

We start with the same high-quality fresh beef fat that could be used for food, but our tallow is produced specifically for cosmetic use in accordance with cosmetic manufacturing requirements.

This page is based on widely accepted scientific understanding of animal fats and traditional rendering practices.
