Our Approach

Scientific research on beef tallow skincare is still developing. While many biochemical properties of beef fat are well understood, there are currently very few clinical studies directly comparing different types of tallow.

For that reason, we aim to separate established scientific evidence from marketing claims and always encourage readers to explore the original research for themselves.

Beef Suet vs Beef Fat: What Does Science Actually Say?

If you’ve spent some time on beef tallow skincare research, you’ve probably come across one common message:

“Only beef suet makes premium tallow.”

It’s an attractive idea. But does current scientific evidence actually support that conclusion?

The short answer is: Not entirely.

Research does show that fat from different parts of the animal has slightly different properties. However, there is currently no strong scientific evidence proving that cosmetic tallow made exclusively from beef suet is inherently superior to carefully rendered tallow made from other high-quality beef fat.

Let’s look at what current research actually tells us.

What is beef suet?

Beef suet is the hard fat found around the kidneys and loins of cattle.

Other beef fat, often called trimming fat or body fat, comes from other areas of the animal such as beneath the skin and around the muscles.

Both are genuine beef fat.

Both can be rendered into beef tallow.

The main difference is their natural fatty acid composition.

The fatty acid differences

One of the most interesting studies comparing different fat depots found that the differences are real—but much smaller than many marketing articles suggest.

Researchers compared beef tallow made from:

•⁠ ⁠kidney fat (suet)
•⁠ ⁠belly fat
•⁠ ⁠trimming fat

They found:

•⁠ ⁠No significant difference in palmitic acid, one of the major fatty acids naturally present in beef tallow.
•⁠ ⁠Higher stearic acid in kidney fat.
•⁠ ⁠Higher oleic acid in trimming fat.

These findings make perfect sense.

Stearic acid is a highly saturated fatty acid, which naturally creates a firmer tallow.

Oleic acid is more fluid, producing a softer texture.

In other words:

Suet naturally makes a harder balm.

Selected beef fat naturally creates a creamier one.

Neither profile is objectively “better.”

They simply produce different textures.

Does this affect skincare performance?

This is where science becomes much more cautious than marketing.

Some skincare brands claim that suet provides:

•⁠ ⁠better skin barrier compatibility,
•⁠ ⁠superior absorption,
•⁠ ⁠better hydration,
•⁠ ⁠higher nutritional value.

However, we are not aware of any published clinical study directly comparing:

⁠a skincare balm made from pure suet with ⁠an otherwise identical balm made from carefully rendered trimming fat on human skin.

Without that comparison, these claims remain logical hypotheses rather than established scientific facts.

Does trimming fat contain meat or impurities?

Another common claim is that trimming fat contains meat residue and produces tallow that smells like steak.

Fresh trimming fat can contain more connective tissue before rendering.

However, rendering exists for exactly that reason.

During proper rendering:

•⁠ ⁠moisture evaporates,
•⁠ ⁠proteins separate,
•⁠ ⁠connective tissue is removed,
•⁠ ⁠impurities are filtered away.

The finished product is purified tallow.

Poor rendering can produce unpleasant smells regardless of whether the starting material was suet or trimming fat.

The rendering process matters just as much as the starting fat.

Is beef suet more nutritious?

This question is often answered with very confident marketing statements.

Current research tells a more balanced story.

The nutritional composition of beef fat is influenced by several factors, including:

•⁠ ⁠whether cattle are grass-fed or grain-fed,
•⁠ ⁠breed,
•⁠ ⁠age,
•⁠ ⁠season,
•⁠ ⁠and which part of the animal the fat comes from.

Grass-fed cattle consistently show higher levels of CLA and omega-3 fatty acids compared with grain-fed cattle.

That finding is well established.

However, evidence showing dramatically higher vitamin or CLA concentrations simply because fat comes from around the kidneys rather than another fat depot remains limited.

In other words:

Grass-fed versus grain-fed has much stronger scientific support than suet versus trimming fat.

What about shelf life?

Because suet generally contains slightly more saturated fat, it may have greater oxidative stability.

That is basic lipid chemistry.

However, shelf life depends on much more than fatty acid composition.

It is also influenced by:

•⁠ ⁠freshness,
•⁠ ⁠rendering temperature,
•⁠ ⁠filtration,
•⁠ ⁠moisture removal,
•⁠ ⁠storage conditions,
•⁠ ⁠oxygen exposure,
•⁠ ⁠packaging.

For that reason, it would be misleading to conclude that tallow made from suet automatically has a longer shelf life than tallow made from carefully rendered trimming fat.

Why we use both

At Cowsmetics, we intentionally combine premium grass-fed beef suet with carefully selected beef fat.

Not because one compensates for poor quality in the other.

But because each contributes different natural properties.

Suet provides structure.

Selected beef fat creates a softer, smoother texture.

Together, they create a balm that feels pleasant to use every day while remaining true to traditional tallow skincare.

Instead of replacing tallow with large amounts of seed oils, we simply use different natural fat deposits from the same healthy, grass-fed animal.

Our philosophy

We don’t believe one part of the animal magically creates better skincare.

We believe great tallow comes from healthy cattle, responsible sourcing, careful rendering, and honest craftsmanship.

Quality isn’t determined by one buzzword.

It’s the result of every step from the farm to the finished jar.

Is Tallow Really Pore-Clogging?

Understanding the Science Behind Skin Compatibility

You may have seen ingredient charts online ranking oils from 0–5 for “comedogenicity” — suggesting which ingredients clog pores.

But there is a problem: these ratings are not as simple as they look.

Many of the traditional comedogenic ratings came from older laboratory testing models, including tests where ingredients were applied in concentrated amounts to rabbit ear skin. These models helped scientists study follicular reactions, but they do not perfectly represent how a finished skincare product behaves on real human skin, with normal cleansing routines and a complete formulation.

A number on a chart cannot tell the whole story. What actually matters? Skin response depends on many factors:

•⁠ ⁠the purity of the ingredient,
•⁠ ⁠oxidation stability,
•⁠ ⁠the way it is processed,
•⁠ ⁠the concentration used,
•⁠ ⁠the complete formulation,
•⁠ ⁠and your individual skin type.

Why we choose beef tallow

Beef tallow has a unique fatty acid profile rich in stearic, palmitic and oleic acids — lipids that are naturally present in human skin.

This makes tallow a highly compatible ingredient for supporting the skin barrier, especially for people looking for a rich, nourishing moisturiser. However, quality matters. Not all tallow is the same.

Our tallow is carefully prepared from premium beef fat, unwanted residues are removed before rendering, and the finished fat is gently filtered to create a clean, stable ingredient.

We believe skincare should work with the biology of your skin — not simply follow outdated ingredient charts.
